Letter to My Kids: Swimming Mt. Everest
Summer is Almost Here, How about a dip in Mount Everest??:
Know how Polar Bear Dipping is popular during winter in Minnesota??
Well check this out…. British Man in Speedo is the first to Swim under Icy Mt. Everest
Date: May 24, 2010
Lewis Gordon Pugh aka “The Human Polar Bear” first braved the freezing waters of Antarctica and the North Pole then set his sights on a bigger feat: Mount Everest. Lewis braved sickness and nearly drowning to swim across Pumori Lake in 22 minutes and 51 seconds. He wore only a Speedo, cap and goggles and had to swim very slowly because of the high altitudes (the lake is 17,000 feet above sea level).
Lewis completed the swim to raise awareness about melting glaciers and the lack of water supply in the Himalayas, “Most glaciers are melting away. The glaciers in the Himalayas are not just ice. They are a lifeline – they provide water to approximately two billion people.”
Congrats, Lewis! We wish you the best on your work.
